Pop-Up Exploration

First we delighted in Robert Sabuda's amazing pop-up version of The Chronicles of Narnia and then collectively shuddered as we made our way through the classic Pop-up Book of Phobias created by Gary Greenberg, Balvis Rubess and Matthew Reinhart.

Next, with Carol Barton's The Pocket Paper Engineer Vols 1 & 2 and The Elements of Pop-Up by David A. Carter and James Diaz at hand, we tried out some pop-up forms.  The collaboration and the cross pollination that developed from exploring pop-ups together inspired some exciting applications.

Here are some forms we learned from the how-to books.

And here are some of the ways we found to use these forms in our work.

Welcoming the Winter Dragon

Dragons may be beneficent or malevolent.  They are a bit like winter in that way.
In our mind's eyes, we observed the winter dragon in its wintery landscape and then wrote some collaborate word streams about what we saw.  Here are some writing samples of what we discovered to be a rather lively, erratic character.
                                               Winter Dragon,
                                               red tongue,
                                               honey comb nostrils,
                                               rasping, clattering
                                               down the snowy hill.
                                               Winter Dragon,
                                               tangerine nostril
                                               smooth tail
                                               stomping, creeping
on the edge of the fence
                                               Winter Dragon,
                                               shimmering blue tail
                                               scaly tongue
                                               singing, lunging
                                               in the hollow.
Using a basic one-two-three fold and shards of Chiyogami paper, participants created these spirited winter dragon books.

October Spirit Shapes Books

What a variety in book forms this month, even with four people starting from the same hinged paper frame.  All the books offer really inviting ways to peek into the rich sensory aspects of October.  Delicious!

ROOTS workshop at the DREAMING GODDESS

Many thanks Rhianna of the Dreaming Goddess for inviting me to offer the ROOTS workshop at the September Pagan Crafts Circle.  What a wonderful, spirited group!  Fourteen women let their imaginations dig deep into the world of roots and found treasure to form their books.  It was great pleasure to witness fourteen uniquely expressive books come into being.  Cheers to you all!

BIRD Flock to the May Workshop

We entered the spaces and rhythms of bird life.  Birds, foliage and flight all emerged magically from acetate transfer mono-prints.  Double pamphlet books took flight as people experimented with ways to create openings and sculptural dimension with paper.
