Painted Paper Books

We took inspiration from Painted Paper, Techniques & Projects for Handmade Books & Cards, Alisa Golden's rich and generous book detailing many exciting approaches to creating decorative papers along with directions for book projects that can be made from these papers.

This was a decidedly delicious session. Our theme this month was the winter moon, but many of us ended up just joyfully following the paint wherever it led.

We all used acrylic inks, and chose between Meridian Drawing paper and Yasutomo Sumi-E painting paper, the first opaque, the second transluscent.

Once the papers were painted and dried, we cut them into individual pages.

Each page was folded. The folded pages were stacked on top of each other. The fore edges of adjoining pages were glued together. More detailed instructions can be found in Alisa Golden's book in the Album Accordion Book section.

And here's one more that I made to illustrate Alisa Golden's instruction for making a cover for the Album Accordion Book. The cover works well with papers like the Meridian Drawing paper that do not allow the paint to bleed through. However, with the Yasutomo Sumi-E painting paper, both sides of the paper show the paint and a cover may not be desired.

Instigation for making tubes into books sprang from work by Michael Basinski on exhibit at 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland Oregon. (This is a wonderful gallery to visit on line.)

Pam Wright dubbed this session TUBE CITY which turned out to be apt since the cylinder promoted architectural thinking. Many of us found this approach freeing and exhilarating.

The theme was evening, though themes are never binding. Our structural form was a simple four panel accordion. Some of us played with ways to extend content across the panels instead of considering them as separate pages. But mostly we all just submitted in delight to the beauty of the new papers on hand from Nepal that suggested the fading colors at dusk and the brilliance of late autumn sunsets.

HARVESTING SMALL THINGS

In a recent dream, book makers were making circle books that had folding tabs around the edges. While I obsessively worked out ways to align the tabs perfectly, the other dream book makers, uninterested in such precision, focused on the September theme: HARVEST. Each one made a collection of small things to glue on the tabs of their circle book: tiny scraps of paper or bits of leaves, shards of wood, even cracker crumbs.

The idea of making a harvest of similar things the focus of an artist book put me in mind of a book by Mary Howe that I recently purchased at her show in Salem NY at the North Main Gallery. This diminutive but long accordion book called To Preserve Tomatoes spills forth one delicious tomato drawing after another. Today our group met and delighted in Mary Howe's tomato book, and then set to work finding ways to turn harvests into books. Some left knowing they wanted to continue working on what they had begun and promised to bring further developments next time. I spent a lot of time trying to find the simple directions for making a paper box that I'd recently learned. In the end I printed out complicated origami directions from the internet. Debbie put them to good use in her book. So many folds. We were impressed. Dianne joined us and made her very first book ever, a book about features of her garden. We were impressed yet again. Karen and Karin went to town in great style with repeated shapes. I played briefly with my dream book and avoided measurement obsession.

Remembering July

Artist Books for the fun of it took a vacation in August and now I'm stretching my memory back to our July gathering. It was hot. We may have been wishing for rain. We
valiantly tried to make do without air conditioning, but finally succumbed gratefully.
The loose focus was TRANSPARENCY, as in air and water and how we could make things float off the pages of artist books. We has some new clear acrylic sheets to use in our continuing exploration of pop-up forms which some of us found inviting. Others chose not to use it. Sadly, the photographs don't fully capture the effect of the transparent elements. Click on the image to enlarge and see a bit more detail.

As a result, we can show a bit more of the books that were made as we traveled back deliciously in memory to summers of our childhoods. More Pop-Up Adventures

Early on, Karen made a series of diagonal cuts in the crease of her paper and did a little folding that made an elegant and mysterious pattern. As we all tried our own experiments we couldn't describe how we made things to each other in words, but grabbed scissors and paper to demonstrate instead. There was a whole lot of snippin' going on and lots of fun and delight, as always. And we were treated to Roberts glorious photos from Mexico as well!

Library patrons stopped by to see what we were doing today. Several asked, "Do you have to have art experience to do this?" The answer is no. A lovely aspect of book making is that you can jump in at any level and enjoy the process.

Pop-Up Exploration

First we delighted in Robert Sabuda's amazing pop-up version of The Chronicles of Narnia and then collectively shuddered as we made our way through the classic Pop-up Book of Phobias created by Gary Greenberg, Balvis Rubess and Matthew Reinhart.

Next, with Carol Barton's The Pocket Paper Engineer Vols 1 & 2 and The Elements of Pop-Up by David A. Carter and James Diaz at hand, we tried out some pop-up forms. The collaboration and the cross pollination that developed from exploring pop-ups together inspired some exciting applications.

BIRD BOOKS at Clinton Community Library
A fast pace drove Artist Book Gatherings in February. We torn, spindled, punched, curled and other ways transformed the pages of discarded books into bird books to be used as decorations for the Clinton Community Library book sale.
There's a gift in working fast. One idea seeds another which in turn suggest new variations. And with all of us working side by side, the variations multiplied. By the end of the Thursday and the Saturday sessions, we had created a huge flock of lively, imaginative bird books.

One of the Thursday night participants said that while the conversations that wove themselves through the evening were delightful, she also liked the periods of companionable concentration when each person dropped deeply into her work. Me too.

DRAGON BOOKS at Millbrook Library

In conjunction with my exhibit, Rune Messages, at the beautiful exhibit space at the Millbrook Library, I was delighted to be invited to lead a book making workshop. We made dragon books using Lokta paper, copper foil and ribbon. Together, a lively group of 15 of us summoned the late winter dragons, some grouchy from snow, some hibernating deliciously, others yearning for spring. It was a wonderful treat to introduce the fun of artist books in Millbrook and to watch spirited dragons come to life, each one full of unique ideas and inspirations.

IMAGERY WORKSHOPS

February also brought the second in a series of workshop focused, in part, on generating imagery for artist books. People often tell me about their insecurity when it comes to drawing and painting. Sometimes they recount unfortunate stories of misguided comments from adults that blighted art making early on. Always there is a yearning in these statements along with the resignation to being "no good at art". But there's good news. Since three year-olds can feel bold enough to make their mark with crayons, markers and big fat brushes loaded with vivid colors without self censoring and agonized self judgement, there's hope for all of us.

In these workshops, besides constructing interesting book forms, we are exploring some accessible ways to develop imagery. What is interesting is that, whatever ones level of artistic experience, each person brings a certain touch or style to the process that then lends artistic cohesion to her book. This touch or style happens automatically, and it lends something spirited to each person's book.

Not every approach to creating imagery is equally appealing to everyone. This offers great opportunities in the workshop setting. By defining what is unsatisfying in a certain approach, participants can adapt and transform the process to something more organic to their vision and their working comfort. This happens to one degree or another for everyone in the workshops. It's very exciting and inspiring for all. And fun!!

Welcoming the Winter Dragon

Dragons may be beneficent or malevolent. They are a bit like winter in that way.
In our mind's eyes, we observed the winter dragon in its wintery landscape and then wrote some collaborate word streams about what we saw. Here are some writing samples of what we discovered to be a rather lively, erratic character.
   Winter Dragon,
   red tongue,
                                               honey comb nostrils,
   rasping, clattering
   down the snowy hill.
           Winter Dragon,
         tangerine nostril
         smooth tail
         stomping, creeping
                                               on the edge of the fence
                                               Winter Dragon,
                                               shimmering blue tail
                                               scaly tongue
                                               singing, lunging
               in the hollow.
Using a basic one-two-three fold and shards of Chiyogami paper, participants created these spirited winter dragon books.

November and the OED

Making books together is always full of wonderful surprises. We came, as planned, with our senses full of November ready to make books. And Susan came with news of the Oxford English Dictionary and its initiative, Save the Words. Susan reported that hundreds of words slip out of the language each year from disuse. At www.savethewords.org, she adopted a word and promised to use it. Her word is pocket-handkerchief which much to our surprise we all found ourselves using throughout the evening.
November found its way into this month's expressive and inventive books. It came as bare branches, caves in which to hibernate, brooding sunsets, and a harvest of seasonal joys. And pocket-handkerchief made an appearance too, as you will see. Thanks to all for an evening of rich fun!

A Delightful Evening at the Heermance Memorial Library

Many thanks to the Friends of the Heermace Memorial Library for inviting me lead a book arts workshop on October 8. The first delight of the evening was discovering the historic waterfront district of Coxsackie NY. The next delight was the beautiful garden approach to the library. But, best of all was the spirit of the people who shared such lively joy in the workshop. I had a wonderful time!
This workshop offered two interesting challenges. First, we let water have a hand in shaping the book by playing with the way water moves ink and buckles paper. Then we shifted gears from bold experiment to the precision of Japanese stab binding. At the end of the evening, we saw that everyone's book revealed its own bold character and exciting surprises.

The EQUINOX held a wide range of significance for September book makers. Viewed as a portal, for some it was harbinger of autumnal delights, for others, a time of mourning for lost summer. Some saw it as a sticking place, a balancing act, or imagined a kind of slinky action as the year flowed over into new times.

Here's a peek at what we made. Some are works in progress. Two pieces were created by people who have never made a book before! I always wish that I could pick each book up again and again to enjoy the spirited, rich content and form that continually springs from this happy play.

ARTIST BOOK GATHERING begins!

ARTIST BOOK GATHERING, a group for people who enjoy making books together, met for the first time in August.

This month, our subject was Under the Summer Sun. Memories and impressions brought by members of the group included the smell of hydrangea in the heat, a ginkgo leaf, the bite of a deer tick, visions of the beach, a fleeting whiff of fall in the air, and paper folded like the spreading rays of the sun. Artist books took shape in great spirit and variety.

One of the exciting prospects of this group, ARTIST BOOK GATHERING, is the opportunity it offers for sharing ideas and supporting one another in finding solutions to the interesting puzzles of book making. Another exciting prospect is the adventure of seeing wonderful, unique artist books come into being.

And now we've begun. Such fun!!!

VOLVELLES Bloom with Unexpected Surprises in June Workshops

The subject was BLOSSOM. The book form was the VOLVELLE, a book comprised of two flat circle "pages" joined at their center points in such a way that they can rotate independently. During rotation, openings cut into the top page reveal words or imagery on the under page.

The form made our heads spin with possibilities and as always in these workshops, each person brought her own vision to the project and created a stunning adventure of a book.

BIRD Flock to the May Workshop

We entered the spaces and rhythms of bird life. Birds, foliage and flight all emerged magically from acetate transfer mono-prints. Double pamphlet books took flight as people experimented with ways to create openings and sculptural dimension with paper.

APRIL WORKSHOP - Japanese Stab Binding Meets Water

Japanese stab binding sharpened wits. Everyone learned four-hole binding and some people boldly incorporated the more challenging tortoise shell and hemp leaf designs in their books. Water proved compelling. In its ebb and flow on a variety of papers, water generated ink-wash images and added sculptural surprise to books by warping and wrinkling the pages. Water even evoked poetry.

Each water book took us all to a unique world; an exploration of pattern and rhythm, memories of the ocean's edge, expressions of grief, a place of rocks and snakes, appreciations of a world shaped by water, to describe just a few. What exciting books! And what fun to enjoy a book making adventure in good company.

JOURNEY WORKSHOP- Lorraine told. We drew.

Storyteller Lorraine Hartin-Gelardi magically wove the story of a woman's loss and quest into an enchanted world of rocks and caves, fairies and feather capes. (www.Lorrainetells.com)

As Lorraine told this journey tale from Scotland, workshop participants engaged expressive gestural drawing techniques to create images for their books.

A double accordion book format allowed for many variations and innovations in the visual retelling of the story. Each book reflected story elements of particular resonance for its maker. Each book offered a unique and intriguing world to explore. What delight it was to hear Lorraine tell this vivid tale and to watch so many expressive beautiful books come to life.

ROOTS Power New Bookworks

I wish I could revisit this evening with the luxury of time. I would hold each book in my hands and explore it at leisure. I would savor again the joy we all felt in sharing our books with each other. Everyone created a lively and beautiful book. Not only that, each book was excitingly unique, a small world onto itself that begged further exploration. Such fun!

Abundant gifts of the natural world postpone first workshop

The class has been postponed until next Thursday evening due to predictions of more snow on top of this morning's accumulation coupled with high winds and arctic temperatures.
